We hope Japanese Government to officially invite North Korea to Asian Regional Conference for WSIS


We have very serious concerns that the Japanese government decided not to invite North Korea to the Asian Regional Conference for World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) and we hope Japanese Government as a host of this regional meeting should make a sincere effort to invite all Asian countries including North Korea to this meeting.

Statement of Korean Civil Society Network for WSIS

This statement has been prepared after diverse issues regarding information society were reviewed and discussed at Korean civil society workshop for the world summit on the information society (WSIS), and contains the common consensus of Korean civil societies to information society. The groups and individuals who signed at the bottom are those who support this statement. And this statement is open to criticism and will be updated continuously.

Civil Society Information Security and Privacy Working Group submitted a Statement on the new Draft of Principles on 17. July. We appreciate the endeavor of the Working Group and we basically agree with the comments. Moreover we want to comment more to the new draft Declaration of Principles. We hope our comment to be taken into consideration at the future process of WSIS.

2003 년 12월에 제네바에서 개최된 <정보사회세계정상회의>(World Summit on the Information Society, WSIS)는 국제연대 활동의 중요한 계기가 되었다. WSIS는 리우환경회의, 베이징 여성회의 등 UN이 개최했던 일련의 정상회의의 하나로서, 2002년 1월 31일, UN은 정보사회세계정상회의에 대한 결의안을 채택하였다. 이 회의는 UN 사무총장 코피아난의 지원하에 국제통신연합(International Telecommunications Union, ITU)의 주관으로 준비되었다.

WSIS는 각 국 정부뿐만이 아니라 기업 및 시민사회의 참가도 허용하였는데, 2002년부터 시작된 WSIS 준비과정을 통해 국내적으로는 정보사회에 대한 국내 시민사회 공동의 입장을 마련하는 계기가 되었으며, 국제적으로는 진보적 미디어‧ 정보운동 단체들과 일상적으로 연대할 수 있는 계기를 형성하게 되었다.
