The Enactment of the Data Protection Act and the Responsibility of the Data Protection Commission
2011/03/10The enactment of the Data Protection Act has been a long-cherished wish of many human rights organizations since the controversy over the electronic ID card began in 1996. The main point in this issue is the establishment of an independent data protection supervisory authority named the Korea Data Protection Commission. The Data Protection Commission, which could be considered as independent, seems to have been created, despite an obstacle of the Ministry of Public Administration and Security to further its own interests.

<statement> Internet powerhouse, Korea? Shame on its Internet policies!
2008/06/16OECD ministerial meeting on "the Future of the Internet Economy" will be held in Seoul, Korea from June 17th to 18th. The Korean government seems to use this meeting as an opportunity to show off its advances of the Internet technology and promote "IT Korea global sales" by hosting the World IT Show and other similar events. We hope this meeting would be a chance for the Korean government to recognize and feel embarrassed for its information and communication policies, including Internet policies, which violate many human-rights and is lagging behind.

2004/07/20On July 1, 2004, the Korean Progressive Network ‘Jinbonet’ held an open conference entitled ‘Tasks and Perspectives of Privacy Impact Assessment’ at the assembly hall of National Human Rights Commission of Korea.
