We can not approve the prior action to initiate the Korea-US FTA negotation.
On July 1, 2004, the Korean Progressive Network ‘Jinbonet’ held an open conference entitled ‘Tasks and Perspectives of Privacy Impact Assessment’ at the assembly hall of National Human Rights Commission of Korea. The Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA) is about the institutionalization of the process to protect individual privacy.
Civil society organizations maintain that the privacy protection act should be established under the supervision of an independent body which can deal with both the public and private sectors.
The Ministry of Information and Communication and also the Ministry of Culture and Tourism have provided an arbitration proposal regarding the expanded use of mobile phones which now includes playing music from MP3 files. The free MP3 files are played with an MP3 player facility on the phones (MP3 phones) and have now become a social issue. As it stands now, the proposal made by the government seriously violates the right of users and should be immediately withdrawn. Furthermore, any counterproposal must be revised to provide assurance of users’ rights.

It must be recognized that the fundamental aim of the Intellectual Property Right regime is to strengthen the consensus and exchange between the authors and users.

This statement has been prepared after diverse issues regarding information society were reviewed and discussed at Korean civil society workshop for the world summit on the information society (WSIS), and contains the common consensus of Korean civil societies to information society. The groups and individuals who signed at the bottom are those who support this statement. And this statement is open to criticism and will be updated continuously.
Civil Society Information Security and Privacy Working Group submitted a Statement on the new Draft of Principles on 17. July. We appreciate the endeavor of the Working Group and we basically agree with the comments. Moreover we want to comment more to the new draft Declaration of Principles. We hope our comment to be taken into consideration at the future process of WSIS.
The union cites legitimate security concerns for its opposition to the system, which initiated and supported by the ministry of education. After a four-day sit-in struggle last week in Seoul’s Hullyeonwon Park, to show their strong opposition against NEIS last Saturday the teachers organized in the KTEWU took the streets of Seoul.
